Nauplius larva is egg-shaped and un-segmented. It has a broad anterior end with a median eye, large labrum and three paired appendages.

Cirripede, any of the marine crustaceans of the infraclass Cirripedia (subphylum Crustacea). The best known are the barnacles. Adult cirripedes other than barnacles are internal parasites of marine invertebrates such as crabs, jellyfish, and starfish, and have no common name. Nearly 1,000 cirripede

The thorax and abdomen, characteristic of adult crustaceans, have not developed yet. Most of the 800 species of barnacles are very small. Barnacles start life as a free swimming larvae called a nauplius. The nauplius has an single-shelled exoskeleton, antennae, and six jointed legs. As it grows it molts and sheds its exoskeleton until it becomes a cyprid.

In the Cyprid stage of their life circle, the barnacles explore potential surfaces and they attach themselves to it.

Because the nauplius stage is lost in several malacostracan taxa, the concept of the nauplius as a phylotypic stage of crustaceans is refuted.

Nauplius larva classification

There is a single, median, nauplius eye at the front of the head. There are only three pairs of appendages, the first and second antennae, and the mandibles. A1 larvae are characterised by three pairs of dorsal humps; these are absent in type A2 larvae. Additionally, caudal spine-like outgrowths of A1 larvae are larger than those of A2 larvae (Walossek and Müller, 1989). Furthermore, a single specimen of a type B larva was described by Müller and Walossek (1986) as representing a possible nauplius.

Nauplius larva classification

A nauplius (plural: nauplii) is the first larval form of most crustacea. It develops from the egg, and may be followed by later stages before the adult form is reached. In some groups there can be as many as nine larval stages.

The nauplius is also the stage at which a simple, unpaired eye first appears. In animal development: The larval stage In crustaceans the larva, called nauplius, does not differ substantially in mode of life or means of locomotion from the adult but has fewer appendages than the adult.

Nauplius (larva) — A nauplius (plural nauplii ) is the first larva of animals classified as crustaceans (subphylum of Arthropoda). It consists of a head and a telson. The thorax and abdomen, characteristic of adult crustaceans, have not developed yet. Most of the 800 species of barnacles are very small.
